Virginia Innovators Build the Future of Affordable Housing with 3D Printing in Henrico County

Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity, Virginia Housing, Virginia Tech and others partners to explore new construction technology for five affordable homes at Carter Place I

RICHMOND, Va., Sept. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Construction is underway on five 3D-printed Habitat for Humanity homes in eastern Henrico County thanks to a unique partnership with a group of affordable housing partners. Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity broke ground on five affordable single-family homes at Carter Place I, a new community at 1590 Darbytown Road near Richmond International Airport.

Though a $1.1 million Innovation Demonstration grant from Virginia Housing, Virginia Center for Housing Research at Virginia Tech purchased a mobile 3D concrete printer with a robotic arm to explore affordable construction techniques across Virginia. Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity is utilizing the 3D printer to complete the homes in partnership with:

• Virginia Tech professors and graduate students in the Myers-Lawson School of Construction, Center for Housing, and the university's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
• Henrico County Affordable Housing Trust Fund, established by Henrico County to expand homeownership opportunities by lowering the cost of newly constructed homes and increasing access for first-time homebuyers.
• HiveASMBLD, a Houston-based automated 3D-printed construction company assisting with printing expertise.
• Tvasta, an India-based 3D printing technology manufacturer and maker of the SIRA RC mobile printer being used on this project.
• Williamsburg Builder Consultants LLC, consulting on construction, structural and zoning permitting.

3D Printing Off-Site Now and Later On-Site
Throughout the fall, project partners will be working with the printer inside a warehouse at 3340 Lanvale Ave. in Richmond to print walls before moving into the home construction phase.

Unlike a traditional stationary 3D-printing system, the mobile technology gives project partners an opportunity to evaluate different approaches to producing homes. With off-site printing, workers can print wall components in a controlled environment and transport the concrete walls to the home site for final assembly. The approach can offer greater productivity and quality control while limiting weather-related disruptions. With on-site printing that is expected later this year, the Tvasta-built printer can produce concrete walls directly at the construction site. 

The Carter Place I project will give partners additional real-world information about the advantages, limitations and costs associated with these emerging construction methods. The research component will help partners document what works, identify opportunities for improvement and better understand how 3D printing technology could be applied and scaled to future affordable housing developments.

About the Carter Place I Development in Henrico County
The Carter Place I project will give the partners additional real-world information about the advantages, limitations and costs associated with these emerging construction methods. The community is named in honor of the late President Jimmy Carter, whose decades of volunteer service with Habitat for Humanity helped bring international attention to the organization's mission. Through a generous grant from the Henrico County Affordable Housing Trust Fund, the County is helping to make the new Carter Place I development possible locally. 

Learning from earlier 3D-printed homes in Virginia
This latest project builds on lessons learned through an earlier Virginia Housing Innovation Demonstration Grant awarded in 2021 that supported 3D-printed home construction in the City of Richmond and James City County.
