GRAND RIVERS, Ken., Oct. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE: VMC) today christened the M/V Hazel Demery, a new tug boat that will be used at the Company's Grand Rivers facility.

The new tug boat is named for Hazel Demery, a nurse and prominent fixture in the Grand Rivers community. Mrs. Demery was guest of honor at the christening ceremony held at Vulcan's harbor, which is adjacent to the Kentucky Dam & Locks.
Beginning in 1951, Mrs. Demery worked as a nurse for Reed Crushed Stone, which was acquired by Vulcan in 1990. Mrs. Demery continued working for Vulcan until she retired in 2009 with 58 years of service.
Among her many activities and honors, Mrs. Demery served on the Pennyrile Area Development District board of directors for approximately 20 years; served as Red Cross Blood Mobile Chairperson from 1962 until 2008 and is commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel and Kentucky Admiral. In 2008, Mrs. Demery received the Distinguished Service Citation from the Office of Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway. She has also served as Livingston County Deputy Sheriff under several administrations.

Vulcan's Grand Rivers facility includes a large limestone quarry, processing plant and harbor. In addition to distributing products by truck and rail, Vulcan ships large quantities of stone by barge on the Mississippi River and Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.
