Want To Bat Cleanup? Plastics Make it Possible® Encourages Baseball Fans To Recycle More Plastics

WASHINGTON, June 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- To encourage people to recycle more plastics, Plastics Make it Possible^® is bringing its unique "recycling" vending machine to Coors Field in Denver, Colo. for today's baseball game. Fans can deposit a plastic beverage bottle into the vending machine for recycling in exchange for a free special-edition T-shirt that uses fabric made with recycled plastics.

Fans and people not at the stadium also can enter a sweepstakes today to win a $500 gift card.

Plastics Make it Possible^® is sponsoring this event and promoting recycling at the stadium to underscore just how easy it is for people to give used plastics another life. Most households today have a wide range of recyclable plastics in their homes, such as beverage bottles, cottage cheese containers, condiment bottles, milk and juice jugs, and much more, that are accepted for recycling in most curbside recycling programs. When recycled, these everyday plastics become the raw material used to make a large variety of new products, such as kitchen tools, furniture, garden planters, construction materials, automotive parts, carpeting, packaging … and even clothing, such as the T-shirts dispensed from the vending machine.

"Our recycling vending machine hopefully will inspire people to recycle more plastics and to look for products made with recycled plastics," said Steve Russell, vice president of plastics for the American Chemistry Council, which sponsors the Plastics Make it Possible^® initiative. "We want to make plastics recycling an American pastime—what better place to reinforce that message than at a baseball game?"

Bob Carson of the Fort-Collins-based company CBW Automation, which makes high-speed robots and automation systems for the plastics industry, will throw out the game's ceremonial first pitch on behalf of Plastics Make it Possible^®.

To help create the T-shirt material, used plastics are cleaned, melted, and stretched into a fine thread, which is woven into soft, comfortable fabrics. Thanks to the versatility of recycled plastics, these fabrics can be manufactured in a variety of weights and textures for a wide range of uses—from stylish dresses to rugged outdoor jackets.

Baseball fans who visit the Plastics Make it Possible^® vending machine at Coors Field can enter for a chance to win a $500 gift card by posting a photo on Twitter or Instagram of themselves depositing a plastic bottle in the machine. Entrants must use the hashtag #IRecyclePlastics and tag @plasticpossible. People who aren't at the stadium also can enter for a chance to win by posting a photo of plastics they recycle.
