Only regionally accredited colleges and universities with nonprofit status are considered for the "Students before Profits Award." Awards are granted to qualifying schools with online degree programs in the relevant discipline offered at a lower than average tuition rate. The award was conceived, in part, as a way to counteract the negative stereotypes of online education fostered by the bad behavior and poor outcomes of the some of the large, for-profit companies that tend to dominate the online education world. The hope is to shine more light on the growing number of established, reputable, nonprofit schools now offering online degree options.
