PURCHASE, N.Y., Feb. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- WESTMED Medical Group will advance the standard of patient convenience by becoming the first practice in Westchester County to offer mammography seven days a week. Starting on Sunday, February 12, 2017, WESTMED will perform screening mammograms for walk-ins and women with prescriptions on Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Ridge Hill (73 Market Street) location in Yonkers. The day is being added for the convenience of women who have an incredibly busy workweek.

Why Early Breast Cancer Detection is Important

A leading multi-specialty practice, WESTMED will perform mammograms for women on Sundays at Ridge Hill whether or not they have been seen by WESTMED physicians or used WESTMED facilities in the past--and even if they do not have a primary physician.

WESTMED already offers mammograms on Saturdays at its Rye location at 1 Theall Road and its White Plains location at 210 Westchester Avenue. Weekday screenings are held in Rye, White Plains, Purchase and Yonkers.

"Research shows that annual mammograms can help detect breast cancers early, when they are most curable, and when it is possible to use breast-conserving therapies," said Dr. Rand Stack, a diagnostic radiologist at WESTMED. Screening mammography is noninvasive imaging that uses a low-dose X-ray to visualize the breast tissue. Radiologists examine the mammogram to detect and diagnose breast diseases. Mammography is important, because it is capable of detecting breast cancer at an earlier stage than by any other technique.

The NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) recommends that all women get a mammogram every year beginning at age 40.

Patients who have mammograms on the weekend will receive timely results by mail. Patients who choose to come to WESTMED for a mammogram during weekday business hours have the additional option of receiving their results immediately, before they leave the facility.
