WGU Indiana recognizes night-shift nurses with seasonal change to daylight saving time
INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 2, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- WGU Indiana will once again deliver Night Shift Nurse Appreciation Kits to hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout the state. The gesture thanks nurses who work an extra hour during their normal shift, due to the daylight savings time change on Nov. 4, 2018.
"When we turn our clocks back at 2 a.m., night-shift nurses across the state will work an extra hour," said WGU Indiana Chancellor Allison Barber. "WGU Indiana is distributing the Night Shift Nurse Appreciation Kits for the sixth year, to honor the important and often unrecognized contributions of night shift nurses."
WGU Indiana started the night shift nurse deliveries in 2013. This year, appreciation kits will reach nearly 4,000 night shift nurses at 127 hospitals and health care units across the state. Each box contains a handwritten thank you note from the WGU Indiana team, prewrapped gourmet brownie treats, sleep masks, stress balls and information about a $2,000 Night Shift Nurses Scholarship.
Night shift nurses face unique challenges, including disruptions in their circadian rhythm, which puts them at risk for fatigue. "From my work as a night-shift nurse for 38 years, I recognize that night shift nurses don't always receive the same recognition as employees who work during the day," said WGU Indiana State Director of Nursing Mary Lawson Carney, DNP, RN-BC, CCRN, CNE. "Night shift work has a significant impact on the physical, psychosocial and professional lives of nurses. The WGU Indiana Night Shift Nurses Scholarship recognizes these nurses for the work they do in the middle of the night so that patients can return to their homes and families as soon as possible."
Dea Gillfillan received the Night Shift Nurse Scholarship last year. She works the night shift and spoke about the impact of the scholarship on her degree attainment. "WGU Indiana is providing me with the skills and resources that I need to advance my career," she said.
