What is a Digital Service Provider? Hint: There is More Than a Single Answer
A communication service provider (CSP) delivers the network connection that enables a variety of communication services—primarily voice, video, messaging, and data. The core switching, routing, and signaling infrastructures that support fixed wireline, broadband, mobile, and cable networks are central to life as a CSP. These network functions, in turn, have been traditionally supported by a complex suite of monetization and management support software, which Stratecast refers to as Operations, Orchestration, Data Analytics & Monetization (ODAM). CSPs are now finding themselves at a crossroads—pushed by new market realities and demands, and pulled by competitive market dynamics—to transform to something different. But transform to what? A digital service provider (DSP) is currently the most common response. The term is suddenly ubiquitous. But what is a DSP?
Why would a CSP want to transform into one? How would it go about doing that? And, are some CSPs already there? The name DSP provides little insight; CSPs already offer "digital services." Stratecast believes that the DSP transformation is more about how a CSP will do business. While a DSP will continue to offer communications connectivity services, it will also expand its portfolio of services—adding value to the connection—in part, by building an extensive partner ecosystem, and by taking steps such as adopting open networking technologies and practices.
While Stratecast believes it is too soon to suggest a direct path to transforming into a DSP, it is important to review the available options, and examine some of the characteristics that are necessary and valuable to a DSP. This SPIE report outlines a few evolutionary routes a CSP might take, and identifies several issues CSPs must keep in mind as they evolve to DSP status. The report also explains why ODAM plays such an integral part within this critical transformation process.
