Witherite Law Group Fights Domestic Violence, Food & Financial Insecurity During COVID-19 With Community-Based Donations
DALLAS and ATLANTA, July 9, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- From food pantry assistance to domestic violence support to putting cash in the pockets of hundreds of people, Witherite Law Group, founded by personal injury attorney Amy Witherite, has invested nearly $200,000 in community-based programs since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Witherite Law Group puts people first, including our clients, our staff and our fellow community members," said Witherite. "As we started to see the wide-ranging impact of COVID-19, we reached out to our community partners to see how we could help."
To address the issue of food insecurity, Witherite Law Group committed more than $30,000 to community partners providing nutritious meals to those in need. The law firm connected with Concord Church of Dallas to support its Serve Saturday initiative, where families safely receive meal boxes in a drive-thru pick-up line, allowing for social distancing.
Also, a frequent supporter of Minnie's Food Pantry, Witherite Law Group distributed two donations, totaling $25,000, to help the organization keep up with increased demand.
"We are seeing hundreds of new families coming through our doors each week. As we serve these families and hear their stories, we are learning how COVID-19 is changing lives and causing financial strains on so many people," said Cheryl Jackson, Founder of Minnie's Food Pantry. Women Called Moses, another Witherite Law Group community partner, noted that quarantine conditions were contributing to an uptick in domestic violence cases. The law firm donated $20,000 to the organization, which provides emergency shelter, court advocacy and crisis counseling for victims of domestic violence, specifically women in southern Dallas and surrounding communities.
"The funds Amy Witherite provided have allowed us to help these women and children adjust to a new way of life during COVID-19, including helping those with medical issues get access to their medication," said Debra Bowles, founder of Women Called Moses.
To respond to historic unemployment numbers, Witherite Law Group also created its own financial assistance programs for clients and community members alike. In April, the firm provided hundreds of its clients nearly $40,000 in Walmart gift cards for unexpected expenses.
Also, in collaboration with radio station partners, Amy Witherite established coronavirus relief cash giveaways, granting $250 each to laid off and furloughed community members. To date, Witherite Law Group has invested more than $80,000 in this program, benefitting more than 325 people in Atlanta, GA and Dallas-Fort Worth.
