Women of Kellogg Providing Better Days Through Volunteerism

It's an especially appropriate question today, on International Volunteer Day. The United Nations General Assembly established this day as an opportunity for people to commit to volunteering, so that we all can work to improve the lives of children and families across the globe. For years, this commitment is exactly what I've seen as part of Kellogg Company – particularly among members of our Women of Kellogg (WOK) employee group.

WOK is an organizational champion for Kellogg's signature global cause Breakfasts for Better Days™ and today we are reaffirming our volunteer commitment to this effort which aims to create 3 billion Better Days for people in need, engage employees in 45,000 volunteer days and inspire 300 million more people to join the fight against hunger by the end of 2025.

This year on World Food Day, Oct. 16, WOK members supported hunger relief efforts by organizing food collection drives and volunteering in Kellogg offices around the world. In just one day – with WOK's support –  several hundred pounds of food were donated to food banks around the world, from the Food Bank of South Central Michigan in Battle Creek, to food banks in Australia and New Zealand. An additional $5,000 from WOK was donated to Feeding America, Kellogg's national partner in hunger relief.

WOK is Kellogg's only global employee resource group, and our largest – providing female employees with a wide range of networking and career development opportunities, as well as volunteer events such as our World Food Day efforts.

What motivates us? We've seen the results of our efforts. We've seen children and families in need around the world enjoy our wholesome Kellogg brands and products through our volunteer work with school breakfast programs, food banks and pantries, and disaster relief sites.

What motivates you? It may start by finding your "sweet spot" – the right task, working with great people for the right cause. Here are tips from experienced Kellogg volunteers:

• Find an organization or cause that is meaningful to you.
• Make sure activities suit your schedule and skills.
• Find a task you enjoy: Stocking a food pantry, writing a newsletter article, organizing a database, calling potential donors – at most nonprofits, the list of tasks is endless!
• Buddy up with friends for fun and a good cause.
• Many organizations also allow children and young adults to volunteer – a great way to instill a commitment to giving back and teaching valuable life lessons. Be sure to check first with the organization!

Together, we can make small, but important changes within our big world – one person, one group, one volunteer at a time.
