'World' magazine editor-in-chief Marvin Olasky speaks at George Fox University

NEWBERG, Ore., Aug. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Marvin Olasky, editor-in-chief of World magazine and the author of more than 20 books and 3,000 magazine articles, will speak on the George Fox University campus from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, in the school's Bauman Auditorium. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and the public is invited to attend free of charge.

Olasky's lecture, "Renewing the Christian Liberal Arts," inaugurates the university's new William Penn Honors Program, an alternative liberal arts general education program for undergraduate students set to launch in the fall of 2014.

In addition to his position at World – one of the world's leading Christian news publications with 100,000 subscribers – Olasky is the Distinguished Chair in Journalism and Public Policy at Patrick Henry College. He is the author of 22 books, including "Compassionate Conservatism," "Fighting for Liberty and Virtue" and "The Tragedy of American Compassion." He's also written 3,000 articles for publications including World, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Previously, Olasky was a professor at The University of Texas at Austin for two decades and provost of The King's College, New York City, from 2007 to 2011.

Olasky earned an AB from Yale University in 1971 and a PhD in American culture from the University of Michigan in 1976. He has been married for 37 years and is the father of four sons.

George Fox's William Penn Honors Program, modeled on the Socratic tutorial style, is designed to hone students' critical thinking skills by exposing them to classical texts and using discussion as the primary mode of instruction. Graduates of the program will be prepared to engage their culture meaningfully at the deepest levels – and they will be able to do so in a humble and gracious manner from an orthodox Christian perspective.
