D-Day is a monumental part of our nation's history that no one will ever forget.
"It's ingrained in my memory, there was wave after wave of airplanes. There were ships galore with balloons flying on their bows. Look at all the work and money that went into creating this. We just overwhelmed them," Bob Saveland said.
"I'm 99 years old, and I still remember marching into a free Paris where its residents were glad to see American soldiers," said James Eure.
"When the war ended in Europe, I already returned to America. My wife and I, newly wed, were having dinner on 57th Street in New York when I learned the good news. Everybody got up from the restaurant and walked down to 42nd Street. It was quite an event to be had there," Saveland recalls.
It is more than evident that James Eure and Bob Saveland still have the most vivid memories of their service. It's something they have never forgotten over the years. These two brave American heroes were honored for their service in World War II at the state Capitol by Consul General of France Denis Barbet. Eure and Saveland currently reside in Athens, Georgia and are patients at PruittHealth – Athens Heritage.
