The "100 Deadliest Days of Summer," the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, is known for a sharp rise in fatal crashes involving teens and young adults, according to the National Road Safety Foundation (NRSF). This year, that period overlaps with UT Austin's fall move-in, creating added risk for distracted drivers and pedestrians unfamiliar with the city.
In 2023 alone, Travis County reported over 17,000 motor vehicle crashes, with a significant portion occurring near campus during peak traffic periods. The combination of out-of-town drivers, moving trucks, and increased foot traffic creates a perfect storm for preventable accidents. Daniel Stark's campaign aims to reduce these risks through proactive community education.
"This time of year is already dangerous on Texas roads," said Casey Kelly, attorney and legal director at Daniel Stark. "Now imagine thousands of students navigating Austin for the first time while staring at their phones for directions. It's a recipe for disaster if we don't raise awareness."
UT Austin received more than 90,000 freshman applications for the Class of 2029, making this one of the largest incoming classes in school history. Many of those students will arrive in Austin from other cities and states, often without knowing the layout of the campus or surrounding neighborhoods.
Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers is continuing its partnership with Allie's Way, a nonprofit focused on ending distracted driving, to extend the campaign's reach. Daniel Stark has produced public service announcements, shared digital safety materials and promoted safer driving and walking habits on and around campus.
The firm encourages new students and their families to take the following safety steps:
- Look up, phones down: Avoid using phones while walking or driving near campus.
- Know the roads: Learn local streets and high-traffic zones before exploring the city.
- Use a buddy system: Travel with friends, especially when using navigation apps.
- Move in mindfully: Be aware of moving trucks, parked cars and foot traffic during arrival week.
- Set expectations early: Parents and guardians should talk to students about safe driving behavior.
"UT students are starting an exciting chapter," Kelly said. "We want them to enjoy it, but also stay aware of their surroundings, especially during the most dangerous stretch of the summer."
