1803 Candles Helps Repair the Waterman Train with Donation
WATERMAN, Ill., Dec 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Upon hearing about the $20,000 worth of damage to the Waterman & Western railroad this past Friday, 1803 Candles has offered to donate an initial $500 plus 5% of all retail sales from both the 1803 Company Store in Waterman and online at 1803candles.com from December 20th 2014 to January 20th 2015.
"We never thought in our wildest dreams that people would help us out like this," says Pete Robinson, owner and operator of the W & W railroad.
Last Friday, December 19, Pete Robinson arrived at Lions Park to ready his train for the busy weekend ahead. He found the oldest Christmas display, 4 arches that light up to look like falling snow, twisted into a heap on the ground.
When Pete learned of the donation of sales from 1803 Candles, he became emotional and said "We greatly appreciate it."
1803 Candles owners, Debi and Darryl Beach, were heartbroken to hear of the news. "When our daughter was young, we took her frequently to ride the train. In 2007, when there was talk of closing down the train, Zoey and Darryl were enjoying a train ride when the Daily Chronicle was there reporting the possible closure. Darryl was interviewed that day, and their picture made the front page of the paper with then 2 year old Zoey's quote as the news heading," claims Debi.
Although the arches and other decorations had been destroyed, Pete and some caring volunteers were able to keep the train running over the weekend and welcomed about 4,000 visitors to the small town of Waterman over Saturday and Sunday.
Donations: A gofundme account has been set up online to accept donations for the repair of the railroad located in Lions Park in Waterman. With 1803 Candles' 5% of retail proceeds, added until January 20th, the goal of $5,000 will hopefully be met.
