1SaleADay.com Shows Support To Ex-AutoZone Employee Fired For Protecting Store With Personal Firearm
Company Expresses Solidarity with Devin McLean and His Family
MIAMI, Dec. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- 1SaleADay.com believes the firing of Devin McLean, who along with his wife is expecting their first child, was an overreaction by AutoZone. 1SaleADay.com is making a donation of baby goods and other useful items to McLean of Hampton, Virginia, the former AutoZone employee who was recently fired for using a personal firearm to frighten off a robber holding the store manager at gunpoint.
McLean, a 23-year-old Air Force veteran, stopped the attempt by a gunman believed to be responsible for as many as 30 robberies in the York, Virginia area. When the man entered the store and pulled his gun on the manager, McLean was able to exit the rear of the store and retrieve his personal handgun from his vehicle. He confronted the robber, who fled.
Two days later, McLean was fired by AutoZone for violating its "no tolerance" policy against employees having weapons inside the store.
"1SaleADay.com is disturbed that Devin lost his job after thwarting this robbery attempt and potentially saving a life," said Eli Federman, Senior Vice President of 1SaleADay.com. "Our company respects AutoZone's 'no guns in the workplace policy.' In fact, 1SaleADay.com maintains a similar corporate policy. But in this case, Devin brought the gun into the store only after it was clear his manager's life was in imminent danger."
While he looks for another job, 1SaleADay.com is sending McLean and his family the following donations:
- Valco high chair
- Levana Baby Monitor
- Baby Feeding Set
- Happy Napper
- VTech Discovery Nursery Farm
- Baby Genius 10 DVD Set
- Melissa & Doug Shape & Sorting Cube
- Melissa & Doug Stacker
- Music and Stars Turtle Light
The company will also send a GPS device for Devin, and a Contour Pillow for his wife.
"Veronica and I greatly appreciate all of the gifts we will be receiving from 1SaleADay. It is an honor to know that they believe in my decision. It's heartwarming to know this company cares about our growing family," said McLean.
"At 1SaleADay.com, our team is always thinking about helping people get what they need on a budget, offering daily deals on electronics, family goods, watches and jewelry, at the lowest prices available. When we read about Devin's termination, we decided to go a step further for him and his family by sending him awesome products, along with our best wishes to help him through this holiday season," remarked Ben Federman, founder and CEO of 1SaleADay, who like Devin is also a military veteran.
