2011 New York Encounter: A Four-Day Cultural Festival in Midtown Manhattan
NEW YORK, Jan. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- New York Encounter is an annual four-day public cultural festival, organized by Communion and Liberation, the Roman Catholic Movement founded by the late Msgr. Luigi Giussani, and Crossroads Cultural Center. New York Encounter intends to offer to a large audience opportunities for education, dialogue, and friendship through conferences, artistic performances, and exhibits. This year it will take place at the Manhattan Center, 581 8th Avenue at 34th Street, from January 14 through January 17, 2011. Below are the major events:
Friday, January 14, 2011
- 7:00 p.m., opening keynote speech by John Garvey, President of The Catholic University of America, on "Education and freedom in contemporary America."
Saturday, January 15, 2011
- 4:30 p.m., How to Build a Human Economy for the Long Term in a (Post-?) Crisis Environment. Clara Gaymard, CEO of GE France, Carla Hendra, Founding Chairman, Global Strategy & Innovation at Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide, and William McGurn, Columnist for The Wall Street Journal will discuss the fundamental questions of work, economy, and finance, the lessons hidden within the crisis, and what may be the way forward.
- 8:00 p.m., "The Tidings Brought to Mary," a special performance of the Paul Claudel play by the Blackfriars Repertory Theater and the Storm Theater. This classical masterpiece of Catholic literature is a story of human and divine love, jealousy, redemptive suffering, and mercy and it explores in a magnificent way the architecture of salvation and the mechanics of grace.
Sunday, January 16, 2011:
- 2:30 p.m., "Reality, reason, freedom: at the root of the religious quest," a discussion about what lies at the heart of any authentic religious experience in light of Msgr. Luigi Giussani's The Religious Sense, published by McGill-Queens University. Cardinal Sean O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston, will be one of the speakers together with Fr. Julian Carron, President of the Fraternity of Communion and Liberation.
- 5:30 p.m., "Can an accomplished scientist be a genuine believer today?" Kenneth Miller, professor of biology at Brown University, Charles Townes, Nobel Prize winner in physics, and Msgr. Lorenzo Albacete, author and columnist, will explore the boundaries of faith and science.
