2015 Cost of Solar Index for Each Massachusetts Metro Area -- A Solar to the People Study
BOSTON, Sept. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As Massachusetts homeowners continue to install solar at a record pace, Solar to the People has released a study examining the price of solar across the Bay State.
Home solar costs are not well publicized, and can vary highly from one state to the next due to rebates and incentives. The purpose of the study is to create more price transparency for Massachusetts homeowners who are considering solar.
Key study findings:
- The average price of installing residential solar in Massachusetts in the first part of 2015 was $20,180, after rebates and incentives.
- This price equates to $2,776 / kW (kilowatt) installed, after incentives and rebates.
- Rebates and incentives reduced the cost of home solar by 38%
- One of the main Massachusetts rebates (Commonwealth Solar II) is no longer available – this rebate reduced the price of solar by an average of 6.8% in the first part of 2015.
- The average cost per kW of solar in Massachusetts before incentives and rebates has fallen 47% since 2008.
- The average cost per kW of solar in Massachusetts after incentives and rebates has fallen 13% since 2008.

The study details costs paid for home solar installations across Massachusetts from 2008 through May of 2015, both on full installations and cost per kW (kilowatt) installed. Detail is provided on costs before and after state and federal incentives and rebates. Study data was obtained from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center's Commonwealth Solar II Rebate Program database.
