2015 Gorkana Financial Journalist Influencer List Topped by Andrew Ross Sorkin, Jon Hilsenrath, Gretchen Morgenson and Michael Lewis
Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and New York Times Most Influential Financial Media Outlets
NEW YORK, May 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Andrew Ross Sorkin, CNBC and The New York Times, Jon Hilsenrath, The Wall Street Journal, Gretchen Morgenson, The New York Times and Michael Lewis, an author and Vanity Fair contributor, were identified as the most influential financial reporters in the 2015 Gorkana Financial Journalists Influencer List. The influencer list is based on data from the 2015 Gorkana Financial Journalists Survey of more than 400 U.S.-based financial journalists. The full results of the survey, which was conducted in partnership with professors Matt Ragas, Ph.D. and Hai Tran, Ph.D. of DePaul University, will be published in the coming weeks.
Rounding out the top ten most influential financial reporters were Jim Cramer, CNBC/The Street, Paul Krugman, The New York Times, Felix Salmon, Fusion, Jason Zweig, The Wall Street Journal, Joe Weisenthal, Bloomberg and Maria Bartiromo, Fox Business.
"Named the most influential financial journalist for the third year in a row, Andrew Ross Sorkin continues to be recognized by other journalists as an industry leader," said Jeni Chapman, Managing Director, Gorkana U.S. "An extraordinary journalist and best-selling author, Andrew is the exemplar of the digital age journalist, who delivers exceptional insight across a range of platforms."
Financial journalists continue to recognize the influence and stature of Jon Hilsenrath and Gretchen Morgenson, who were ranked second and third overall in 2015, the same as in 2014.
Potentially boosted by the release of his influential book "Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt," Michael Lewis' position rose from joint fifth on the influencer list last year to joint third place with Morgenson this year. Jim Cramer ranked fifth, up three places compared to the previous year. Paul Krugman, The New York Times, Felix Salmon, who moved from Reuters in 2015 to become Senior Editor at Fusion, and Maria Bartiromo of Fox Business, remained in the top ten. Jason Zweig of The Wall Street Journal and Joe Weisenthal of Bloomberg joined the Gorkana Influencer List for the first time.
In addition to selecting the most influential reporters, the journalists surveyed listed in rank order The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and The New York Times as the most influential financial media outlets for the third year in a row. Rounding out the top five were the Financial Times and CNBC. CNBC moved ahead of Reuters this year, which ranked sixth overall. The Economist, Forbes, Fox Business and Yahoo! Finance all ranked in the top ten. Yahoo! Finance dropped two places to 10th compared to a year earlier and Forbes claimed the eighth position this year, up from joint 11th in 2014.
A number of well-known financial media outlets were not mentioned enough to make the top 10 including Business Insider, MarketWatch and CNNMoney.com.
"The rankings of the most influential publications remain quite stable with The Wall Street Journal still clearly the most influential financial media outlet in the U.S.," added Chapman. "Bloomberg is by far the next most influential financial outlet, underscoring the dominant position it has carved out in the industry. Given The New York Times' broader focus, its perennial high ranking in terms of financial influence underscores the strength of its business and financial coverage."
The survey results show the continued importance of the traditional major financial media outlets in terms of perceived influence. The long-term influence of on-line only outlets by financial journalists, including Twitter, remains an area to watch.
The influencer rankings were based on nominations by financial journalists, who submitted up to three names of news professionals they perceived as the top influencers in financial journalism. The rankings were based on the number of nominations received for each individual journalist. A similar ranking system was used to rate the most influential media outlets.
The data were drawn from the 2015 Gorkana Financial Journalists Survey conducted in March in partnership with professors Matt Ragas, Ph.D. and Hai Tran, Ph.D. of DePaul University. A total of 422 U.S.-based financial journalists responded to the 2015 Survey. Previous Gorkana Financial Journalist Surveys were launched in 2014 and 2012. The full survey report, which outlines trends and reporters' perspective on topics including the economy, the outlook for financial journalism and changes in the perceived credibility of story sources, will be published in the coming weeks.
