3rd Annual Sandy Hook Ride On Washington Set To Show Unity For Sensible Gun Violence Prevention
Team 26 Embarks on 400 Mile Bike Ride from Newtown, Ct. to Washington, DC To Shine Light on Gun Violence Epidemic and Build Bridges Across Communities
NEWTOWN, Conn., March, 25, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Gun violence touches all ethnicities and socio-economic groups and the push for more sensible gun safety legislation has helped to unify communities that would appear to have little in common. Team 26, 26 cyclists inspired to action after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Ct. on December 14, 2012, will ride from Newtown, Connecticut to the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. from March 28 – 31 in the 3rd annual Sandy Hook Ride on Washington ("SHROW") to raise awareness for the need to reduce gun violence, and to honor all of the victims.
Team 26 will stop along the way in big cities and 1-traffic light towns to build bridges and spread the message of peace, hope and love. The team consists of top amateur and masters cyclists from the Northeast. Four riders live in Newtown -- Monte Frank, Bill Muzzio, Armand Daccache and Bill Begg. Two riders have children who went to the Sandy Hook School. Two riders, Omar Samaha and Tommy Fadoul, lost a family member in the Virginia Tech shooting. Team 26 includes high school and college students, parents, teachers, doctors, lawyers and other community members. Team 26's partners consist of community leaders and organizations, elected officials and grassroots and national gun violence prevention groups.
The four-day "rolling rally" will include events in Newtown, Ct., Ridgefield, Ct, Greenwich, Ct., Bronx, NY, Harlem, NY, Montclair, NJ, Morristown, NJ, Ambler, Pa., Hockessin, De., Baltimore, Md., College Park, Md., the Washington National Cathedral, Washington, DC and end at the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building. A full ride itinerary can be found below.
Specifically, the riders support common sense measures to help curb gun violence:
- Requiring all gun sales to be subject to a background check.
- Instituting a ban of high-capacity magazines.
- Making gun trafficking a federal crime, including real penalties for "straw buyers."
- Restricting firearms when a temporary restraining order is issued in domestic violence cases.
"We ride for all victims of gun violence," said Team 26 Leader Monte Frank. "Every year of this ride has attracted more and more supporters to our movement. So many are frustrated with the inability of Congress to act in face of overwhelming support for common sense gun violence prevention measures. Our voices need to be heard and actions need to be taken. "
