
48th BGJF to Continue Success Streak as Thai Gems and Jewelry Exports Expected to Exceed US$12 Billion This Year
BANGKOK, Aug. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The upcoming 48th Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair (BGJF48) in on track to continue its role as the main mechanism for the Thai gems and jewelry industry in taking on the world market with its astronomical rise of exports expected to exceed US$12 Billion this year, government and industry leaders announced yesterday.
The 48th BGJF was officially launched in style yesterday at the Grand Ballroom of the Shangri-la Hotel and attended by industry leaders and government trade-promotion officers.
Newly elected TGJTA President Mr. Somchai Phornchindarak is a familiar face to the BGJF crowd, as he formerly was the popular CEO of the organizing committee for several years. The BGJF's new CEO, Mr. Wisut Ittipornvanich, was formerly the TGJTA's director of PR.
Heading the Thai government's delegation, Khun Anchalee Promnart, the Deputy Director General of the Department of Export Promotion (DEP), expressed her confidence of the BGJF as the country's main platform for gems and jewelry trade that has seen staggering growth in recent years. The BGJF is the main marketing mechanism to bolster trade on a global scale.
"Due to the BGJF, global traders recognize and accept with highest confidence the drive of the Thai gems and jewelry industry," she stated. "We have exceeded our expectations as Thailand heads towards being a leader in the world's gems and jewelry trade."
Mr. Somchai expressed his utmost confidence that the 48th BGJF will be the best one ever as statistics have shown. He also pledged to continue the progressive push for the BGJF to remain the main mechanism in the move for "Thailand: The World's Gems and Jewelry Hub."
"In the first two quarters, Thailand's export figures of gems and jewelry is at US$6.55 Billion, a growth of 9.82 percent compared to the same period last year," he stated. "We are confident to exceed the target of US$12 Billion for 2011."
Mr. Somchai also stated that the growth is attributed to various strategic moves spearheaded by the TGJTA and supported by the Thai government such as the Zero Vat incentive for import of rough stones, various signings of Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with major markets such as China and India and several initiatives to tie in future markets such as the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
Additionally, the Ploi Thai country brand has played a crucial role in creating awareness and understanding of Thai craftsmanship and ingenuity for gems and jewelry creation all across the world that will eventually lead to the strategic target of making Thailand the World's Gems and Jewelry Hub, Mr. Somchai said.
New BGJF CEO Mr. Wisut expressed confidence that the 48th fair will be a stamp of confidence for all Thai gems and jewelry manufacturers and is ready to welcome the tens of thousands of traders from all over the world.
"We have continuously increased numbers of visitors and exhibitors from the 47th BGJF," he said, "with the strategy for the BGJF to be a major force of the Thai gems and jewelry industry to the world."

The 48th BGJF will be held at the usual venue, the Challenger Hall of IMPACT, in Muang Thong Thani, which is Thailand's largest exhibition center. It will be held from September 14 to 18, 2011.
