A "Breakthrough" Mosquito-Control Platform Technology Now Offers a Highly Effective Method to Kill Disease-Spreading Mosquitoes Before They Strike
It's an Easy-to-Use, Non-Toxic and Eco-Friendly Bio-Gel That Could Diminish Threat to Global Health Crisis
CHICAGO, May 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A team of biotech researchers has announced a new proprietary "breakthrough" platform technology that has the potential to impair the ability of deadly mosquitoes to reproduce and spread disease around the world.
In this case, the remedy is a non-toxic, water-activated, bio-adhesive film called Corimer™ bio-gel. It was invented by Frank K. Leung, M.D., F.A.C.E., and developed by researchers at Coremed LLC, an Illinois-based company (www.coremedbiotech.com)
Leung, a summa cum laude graduate in chemistry, is a board-certified physician and Harvard-trained endocrinologist who has been engaged in diabetes and polymer research for 15 years.
Armed with this "breakthrough" technology, the global health-care community would have a new tool that targets the insect's reproductive cycle that takes place on the surface of shallow, still water, Leung said.
"Once it makes contact with water, the gel forms a bio-adhesive covering immediately (within 2 to 5 seconds). It self-spreads rapidly into a uniform plastic film which can last for months, similar to 'Handi-Wrap™.' Live larvae and pupa experiments showed that they have great difficulty anchoring themselves on a water surface to breathe. They get exhausted and drown."
Corimer™ safety data presented at AAPS, using rat fibroblast cell culture model for cell growth, morphology and apoptosis for chromatin condensation and nuclear fragmentations, suggested that it is non-toxic to cells.
In vivo control studies, the results indicated outstanding efficacy and reproducibility in killing 80% of immature mosquito forms in one hour and 100% in 24 hours, without the need to use insecticides or larvicides. It is fast-acting and lasts months, Leung said.
Corimer™ can trap and remove within seconds carbon particles from 100 to 1,000 microns in size. (A mosquito egg is typically 1,000 microns). It can be effective in controlling algae growth and water-surface contamination due to debris.
A solution of 100 ml of Corimer™ can form a film covering 51 square feet. Results may vary. The bio-gel is composed of GRAS ingredients.
Corimer™ can be administered through small sewage drain openings to control underground insects in toilets and numerous public venues.
Corimer™ also can form a plastic covering over garbage dumps to combat odors and insects.
How to use:
Over a small area, cover all still water surfaces by adding a few drops of Corimer™ bio-gel. Leave film in water.
Over a large area, use fogging or spraying devices.
Corimer™ bio-gel represents an innovative, eco-friendly water-management technology. Not only does Corimer™ block a mosquito's reproductive cycle, it is also a water-treatment technology that has the potential to remove debris from the environment. The film can easily and completely be discarded.
