LOS ANGELES, April 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Meet (the app) meet-the-app.com is a new kind of social network; utilizing geolocation to introduce you to people who share your passions, hobbies and interests—whatever they are. "The idea is to connect you with the people all around you who like what you like," says founder Jordan Goodwin.

Leaving his post at Grindr in June of last year, Goodwin set out to build a place online for those just out to find new friends in their area, not necessarily looking to date or hook up. Sharing your existing social media accounts with groups like actors, mormons, vegans, veterans, and so on, the aim is to encourage interesting discussion among people nearby, hopefully bringing neighbors together.

"Facebook is great at keeping you in touch with people you already know, Twitter connects you to the world at large, but unless you're single, there's really no effective medium online for interacting with locals. My buddy used to play hockey, for example, but he's been in L.A. for two years now and still hasn't found anyone to play with. That's a total shame."

A social network is only as strong as its userbase, but Goodwin hopes to grow Meet organically by partnering with organizations already looking for his services. "I know from my time at Grindr that there are groups around the world that would really appreciate seeing their members sorted by distance, with simple forum posts and group messaging, etc."

For now, the service is considered beta, and completely free. Anyone interested in connecting a community of their own need simply apply over email to [email protected].

"I think location-based chat is a big opportunity for sports fans, new parents, and a million other groups out there, but building an infrastructure for each would be daunting an inefficient. For now, I really just want to help some people introduce themselves to the world."
