Abercorn International School approaches Thanksgiving with local reflection on a global scale.
AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The students of Abercorn International School are learning how to build a community. As we approach the holiday season, it is important to reflect on the events of the past, as well as to be mindful of the people both close and far who are in need. The last few weeks have offered the opportunity for Abercorn students to learn, honor and give.
The students and staff at Abercorn were honored to celebrate Veterans Day with three members of the community who are veterans; a parent who served in Korea, a faculty member who served in Iraq, and a Lakeway police officer who trained with the Air Force Special Operations. The students had the opportunity to hear each veteran tell a little about their experiences in the armed forces, and to better understand the significance behind this important holiday. A donation from the school community to honor our veterans was made to the Central Texas Veterans' Hospital.
As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches and thoughts turn to family and friends, the Abercorn Community is pleased to help those in the Lake Travis area who are in need. Several hundred pounds of food and personal goods were donated and delivered to the Lake Travis Food Pantry for their Thanksgiving distribution. The Lake Travis Food Pantry was most grateful for this large donation.
As an International School, Abercorn students are citizens of the world. It is a vital part of the school's mission that the students are globally minded, caring and responsible individuals. In response to the human tragedy and destruction in the Philippines, the students donated money in order to attend school for a day in non-uniform clothes. A total of $880 was sent to the American Red Cross for disaster relief in the name of Abercorn International School.
Mrs. Franciska Bayliss, Headmistress, remarks, "Our Abercorn families are extremely generous when it comes to helping others. Parents set a very important example for their children that will shape the kind of citizens they will become."
