Access to Economic Justice: Pro Bono Legal Clinic Supports Students at Ryerson University
TORONTO, April 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ - Ryerson University, the Ryerson Students' Union, Pro Bono Law Ontario and Miller Thomson LLP have launched a partnership to bring pro bono legal services to Ryerson students and members of Ryerson's Digital Media Zone. This collaborative effort makes legal services available to full and part-time students through a monthly legal clinic focusing on business start ups, employment law, personal tax, personal debt, consumer law, small claims court preparation assistance and referrals to other organizations or sources of information. Clinics are held on the third Thursday of every month, excluding July and August.
In addition to the clinic, Miller Thomson lawyers will participate in the 2012 - 2013 curriculum for fourth year commerce degree students. With guidance from Miller Thomson lawyers, teams of Ryerson commerce students will provide practical advice to Ryerson student entrepreneurs in the areas of business law and entrepreneurship - guiding these future leaders through potential hurdles to aid in a successful launch of a business.
"Many students face uncertainties surrounding the legal implications of money, taxes and employment. This effort will provide important guidance for students working hard to keep their studies on track and supports young entrepreneurs," said Gerald Courage, Chair, Miller Thomson LLP. "Offering legal services to students on a pro bono basis is part of our overall effort to support this country's future business and civic leaders."
These Ryerson initiatives represent a cooperative effort between the Ryerson Law Research Centre, the Law & Business Faculty of Ryerson's Ted Rogers School of Management, the Ryerson Students' Union, Pro Bono Law Ontario and Miller Thomson LLP.
"We are delighted to work with our partners in providing much needed legal services for the Ryerson community and terrific learning opportunities for our students. These projects exemplify Ryerson's embrace of experiential learning in a way that serves the community," said Avner Levin, Academic Director of the Ryerson Law Research Centre and Chair of the Law & Business Department of the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University.
