Accretive Wealth Management Offers Investment Boot Camp and Competition to Teens to Further STEM Education

To help them attain this goal, Accretive Wealth will hold a free "investment boot camp" for teenagers on May 17, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at its offices at 12657 Alcosta Boulevard, Suite 150, San Ramon.

This training session will prepare attendees for an investment competition that will award a $250 cash prize to the lucky winner. "We think it's very important for high-school students to get an early introduction to how the stock market works," said Faraz Sattar, CEO and Managing Partner of Accretive Wealth. "We want this to be fun as well as educational, so we added the element of competition with a big cash prize. Stock market games and simulations provide a fun way to learn all about the process of making good investments and will help students learn how to achieve financial stability."

The boot camp will cover the importance of financial goals, the risks and rewards of investing, stock terminology, and simple trading strategies and tools. Attendees will be shown how to use an online simulation tool to set up a stock portfolio. On June 16, students can begin trading in their portfolio. The winner of the $250 prize is the student whose portfolio has grown the most by July 15.

This adventure will help students expand their knowledge and gain new skills in investing, saving, communication, research, and decision-making. "We think an additional benefit to the course is that students who play are much more likely to earn high scores on personal finance exams than those who do not play," said Sattar.

Strengthening STEM skills

The lessons learned through the simulation will carry over not only to mathematics and economics courses, but also to technology and science classes. These are the fields that proponents of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education have identified as being crucial to success in today's world. Using 2011 figures, the Brookings Institute estimated that 26 million U.S. jobs—20 percent of all jobs—require an in-depth knowledge of STEM fields.
