Acquisition of Additional Securities of North American Energy Partners Inc.

NEW YORK, Oct. 3, 2011/PRNewswire/ -- Harbinger Group Inc. (NYSE: HRG) (the "Company") announced that it acquired in open market purchases on the New York Stock Exchange on October 3, 2011, an aggregate of 65,000 common shares ("Shares") of North American Energy Partners Inc. (the "Issuer") 30,000 of which were purchased at a price of US$5.37 per Share, and 35,000 of which were purchased at a price of US$5.47 per Share.  These 65,000 Shares represented approximately 0.18% of the outstanding Shares.  Together with the Shares previously acquired by the Company, the Company holds an aggregate of 6,974,410 Shares, representing approximately 19.24% of the outstanding Shares.  All Shares owned by the Company are held in the name of HGI Funding, LLC, a Delaware limited liability company and a direct wholly-owned subsidiary of the Company.

The Shares are currently being held for investment purposes.  However, the Company and its affiliates (the "Harbinger Persons") expects to evaluate on an ongoing basis the Issuer's financial condition and prospects and its interest in, and intentions with respect to, the Issuer and their investment in the securities of the Issuer, which review may be based on various factors, including the Issuer's business and financial condition, results of operations and prospects, general economic and industry conditions, the securities markets in general and those for the Issuer's securities in particular, as well as other developments and other investment opportunities. Accordingly, each Harbinger Person reserves the right to change its intentions and develop plans or proposals at any time, as it deems appropriate.
