FAIRFAX, Va., May 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Rapidly rising fuel costs and a slow economic recovery has Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies advising consumers this summer vacation season to fully fund their vacations for a "paidcation."
"Adding vacation expenses to what, for many, are significant debt loads is never a good idea," said David Jones, president, AICCCA. "This is particularly true for a non-mandatory expense such as a summer vacation."
AICCCA offers the following tips for a "paidcation":
Determine how much you have or will have saved. Determining your budget is key to making a paidcation work for you. Calculate what you will have saved before your scheduled vacation and then plan your trip and activities based on the total amount saved.
Adjust your expectations to match your budget. You may have decided to have a beach vacation in Hawaii, but if your budget doesn't allow that, consider a beach closer to home. You may have to compromise on location, but you then may be able to upgrade your lodging. The main thing is keep expenses within the funds you have saved.
Consider planning activities around your own city and stay at home. Should your budget be too small to travel for vacation, you can still enjoy time off from your normal daily routine. Become a tourist in your own city or town and take advantage of the cultural and fun venues that are in your own back yard.
