Throughout his 35-year legal career at two global firms, Monte was recognized as one of the nation's preeminent health lawyers. His clients, who relied on him for "bet-the-company" transactions and crisis management, ranged from small rural hospitals to the largest not-for-profit and publicly traded health systems in the U.S. He is among the few health attorneys globally to have led multiple multi-billion-dollar hospital mergers and sales. While practicing in Chicago at McDermott Will & Emery, he served as Chair of the firm's Health Law practice, the largest in the country, driving its growth into an industry leader.

In addition to his legal and advisory work, Monte has contributed to legal education as a Bigelow Teaching Fellow and Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School. He is also a frequent speaker and author of hospital-physician alignment, fiduciary duties of nonprofit trustees, and rural healthcare challenges.

Now based in Boulder, Colorado, Monte serves on several national and local nonprofit boards, and mentors young entrepreneurs and attorneys—when not hiking in the Rockies.
