CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Akamai® Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading cloud platform for helping enterprises provide secure, high-performing user experiences on any device, anywhere, will showcase its Operator CDN solutions to both fixed-line and mobile operators at the upcoming CDN World Summit, taking place October 2-4, 2012, at the Thistle Marble Arch Hotel in London.
Although large network service providers have been in the video distribution business for many years, the changing nature of IP video has created both new challenges and opportunities. High-quality, long-form video is no longer bound to linear broadcast channels, or to limited on-demand video libraries. Consumers are accessing unprecedented amounts of video content from multiple online sources through a variety of devices – all at the user's convenience. To address this new reality, operators are exploring a variety of methods to bring CDN services into their networks.
"Fixed-line and mobile operators want to manage and monetize Internet traffic, introduce new video and media services that address evolving subscriber demands, and provide other cloud services," explained Mick Scully, vice president and general manager, Carrier Products, Akamai. "We believe the combination of technologies in the converged Operator CDN model offered by Aura Network Solutions is the best approach to address the new opportunities and challenges in IP video."
Akamai Aura Network Solutions provide a network operator with a single converged operator CDN (O‑CDN) designed to offer maximum control of traffic flow, reduced network expenses, delivery of video services, and monetization of Internet traffic. The converged O-CDN model gives the operator freedom to build out dedicated CDN capacity to meet its business objectives. As such, the operator decides where capacity will be deployed, how it will be used, how content requests will be routed, and which content will be served.
Visitors to the CDN World Summit can see demonstrations of the Aura Networks Solutions O‑CDN at the Akamai meeting room. In addition, conference attendees can participate in two sessions that highlight the opportunities and challenges operators currently face.
On Tuesday, October 2 at 9:40 a.m. GMT, Akamai Vice President of Mobile Products Lior Netzer will present "Utilizing a CDN to Make Mobile Networks Applications Aware." The session will cover topics including the diverse QoS needs of mobile sites and applications; how to best manage and monetize the network by addressing application needs; network optimizations and content adaptation for an optimal user experience; and best practices for deploying a solution that satisfies the business priorities of application owners.
On Wednesday, October 3 at 10:10 a.m. GMT, Akamai Vice President and General Manager, Carrier Products Mick Scully will deliver a keynote session titled "Establishing Successful Business Models for Telco CDNs." Scully will address the benefits of a hybrid CDN approach for volume-based and value-based services; the impact of CDN pricing on market opportunity; reducing delivery costs through better traffic offload and control; offering video services to multiple screens over multiple networks; and options for extending enterprise cloud services via CDNs.
