Alabama Stop-Sale System Blocks Illegal Sales & Allows Legal Ones

LUTHERVILLE, Md., Nov. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) – a nonprofit organization that facilitates cooperation between law enforcement, healthcare professionals, state regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers in the prevention and investigation of drug diversion – today applauded the release of data by the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) demonstrating the real-time, stop-sale system in Alabama is blocking illegal sales of safe and effective medications containing pseudoephedrine (PSE). In fact, according to the El Paso Intelligence Center's (EPIC) data, in Alabama, from January through September of this year compared to January through September of last year, there was a 74% drop in meth lab incidents. Meth lab incidents are reported from across the country by representatives of EPIC, which includes officials from the Drug Enforcement Administration, National Drug Intelligence Center, FBI, Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies.    

"The compelling data from Alabama demonstrates that real-time, stop-sale technology is blocking illegal sales, while allowing law-abiding citizens to access popular and reliable medications to manage common colds and allergies," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI). "In the last year alone, NPLEx has blocked the sale of nearly 79,000 boxes of products containing pseudoephedrine from being sold in Alabama for a total of more than 185,000 grams being kept off the street. We believe employing electronic technology in Alabama is proving to be very effective as it is blocking illegal sales, while allowing legal ones to families and workers."
