Ambassadors Scholarship Foundation To Award One Courageous Student The Rafer Johnson Travel Scholarship

SPOKANE, Wash., Dec. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ambassadors Scholarship Foundation, the foundation sponsored by People to People Ambassador Programs, is now accepting applications for its annual Rafer Johnson Scholarship. The scholarship covers the full cost of a People to People student trip for a student who is currently enrolled in a People to People program and has demonstrated courage while overcoming a significant physical disability or illness.

"The Rafer Johnson Scholarship honors the spirit of Rafer Johnson by offering a scholarship to a student who has overcome significant physical adversity," said Ryan Oelrich, director of the Ambassadors Scholarship Foundation. "It is important to us to recognize students who have worked hard to overcome obstacles and have a hunger to learn more about other nations and cultures—something we believe will help the youth of today become the leaders of tomorrow."

Rafer Johnson is a world and Olympic record holder in the decathlon. He has since focused much of his time on helping disabled children and adults, and has been on several national and international boards, including the Special Olympics. He has also been a long-term supporter of international peace exchange and is a former board member of Ambassadors Group, and one of the original supporters of the People to People movement in the 1960s.
