The Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTWs) and other point source discharges have improved the treatment and disposal of effluent water significantly in the USA. As of January 1, 2012, 14,478 POTWs were serving 238.2 million people throughout the USA. The US government invested more than $2.2 trillion in the last 60 years on their maintenance and operations. One of the major issues concerning waste water management is the constant need to update the wastewater treatment plants, as the machinery tends to deteriorate over time. Also, metro areas like Seattle and Portland have spent billions of dollars to control the problem of combined sewer overflows (CSO's). Despite the heavy public and private investments made, there is a wide scope for the environmental consultancy firms in this area.
Brazil has been facing problems regarding waste water management due to inefficient and medieval approach towards sewage treatment. Only 40% of the sewage generated is treated by approximately 2800 sewage treatment plants. According to government figures, Mexico's waste water treatment coverage was 53.3% in 2014 and the government plans to increase the coverage to 63% by 2018.
