American Southwest's Biggest Apartment Complex Is Proving That Diversity And Integration Are The New Keys To Rewarding Elderly Living And To Rental Success
PHOENIX, Dec. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The era of senior citizen communities, which began a half-century back and quickly gained great popularity, seems to be showing its age. And the success of the largest apartment community in the American Southwest, Arizona's Vaseo Village in North Phoenix, has borne out a new trend described by renowned psychotherapist Stacy Kaiser as "the growing desire of older renters not to be ghetto-ized in grey hair communities."
According to Kaiser, a Los Angeles-based psychotherapist who is a frequent guest expert on national news shows relating to psychological aspects of modern living and who helps guide many retirees through this period, senior citizens are increasingly focused on "communities offering greater free time and youthful neighbors. The happy voices of neighbors' children and young families living life fully are starting to be viewed by senior citizens as providing a richer lifestyle than a surrounding exclusively of 'folks our own age'. They are responding to communities placing emphasis on that."
The Vaseo management attributes much of its high occupancy and resident loyalty to the fact that multi-generational life in its population of over 3000 is essentially a microcosm of American society. "We have designed it to help residents alleviate the everyday life burdens so they can focus on the things that mean the most to them, like spending quality time with their family and friends," says Robert Klein, President of Klein Financial Corporation, operating partner of Vaseo Apartments.
"By offering amenities such as a grocery store, a cafe with beer and wine, a movie theater, full service kitchens, sports courts, 24/7 gym access, major onsite events, Starbucks and much more, residents are able to spend less time getting to and from places and more time on the people and things that matter most, which is an amenity that is priceless," Klein added. "Time is such a valuable commodity so it only makes sense that residential communities like Vaseo are beginning to embrace this concept."
Gone are the days where adult active communities attract only active adults. From millennials to baby boomers to families, residents of all ages are being drawn towards communities like Vaseo for the mere fact that it is safe, affordable and has a growing list of conveniences that help create more free time.
Such considerations, psychotherapist Stacy Kaiser observes, comprise a major reason many vital baby boomers are choosing to re-engage with the full mix of a varied society. "The new norm for the AARP set is, increasingly, a blended society keeping them in touch with a rich mixture of people of all ages and social circumstances. They are starting to conclude that life is most richly enjoyed by tapping in rather than dropping out."
She points to the Vaseo success story as evidence of what she calls "the rejuvenation of our older population."
