Americans win Father & Son Tournament at St Andrews, Scotland
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2014 Father & Son Tournament proved a very special family affair for the Pinckneys from Syracuse, New York. After four rounds of championship golf, Doug Pinckney Jnr. and his son, Doug Pinckney III, won the prestigious trophy after finishing first in a field of 26 teams containing 11 different nationalities.
Victory in the tournament is always a special occasion for the winners, however the Pinckneys were blessed with three generations, as grandfather Doug Pinckney Snr., made the trip across the Atlantic to follow his son and grandson on their round each day.
The tournament, held every April, welcomes golfers from all over the world to compete in honor of the legendary Old Tom Morris and his son Tommy.
A true pioneer and exponent of golf, Old Tom Morris elevated the sport from its primitive roots as a legendary green keeper, course designer and professional golfer. Winning the British Open four times in the 1860's, Morris remains the oldest person to have won the event at the age of 46. His son Tommy, who won at the tender age of 17 in 1868 and went on to win four Opens in a row, remains the youngest winner of the event.
This year was the thirteenth playing of the tournament at which Morris and young Tommy's achievements are commemorated on the courses designed and kept by Old Tom himself.
Held over five days, the tournament is 72 holes of competition golf over New Course, Kingsbarns, Carnoustie and culminating at the legendary Old Course. Competitors also enjoy a variety of social events including a farewell gala dinner dressed in kilts! Next year's event is April 18th - 23rd, 2015.
