Amped Fitness First-Ever Amped Summer Creator Challenge Brings 2,000+ Creators and Awards $25,000 in Prizes

Joel "J.D." Valdez earns the $10,000 Grand Prize after his story of resilience stood out among thousands of videos and personal journeys shared throughout the summer

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Amped Fitness today announced Joel "J.D." Valdez as the $10,000 Grand Prize winner of Amped Summer, concluding a three-month creator challenge that brought together more than 2,000 creators competing for a $25,000 prize pool. 

Launched in June as the first major activation of the Amped Creator Program, Amped Summer invited creators to take audiences inside their own experience with the brand. Throughout the summer, thousands of videos captured transformations, friendships, humor, training, personal milestones, setbacks, comebacks and stories that reached far beyond the gym.

Together, the content was seen more than 100 million times across social media, giving audiences a look at thousands of different journeys unfolding across the Amped community. Amped Fitness awarded $25,000 across 12 winners throughout the challenge.

"More than 2,000 creators opened up their lives to us, and we loved seeing the creativity and the stories that came with it. There were so many that stood out, but J.D.'s journey was one we simply couldn't forget."

In 2021, Valdez, a Houston father and business owner, was leaving a grocery store when he was shot six times by a stranger. An innocent bystander, he suffered serious injuries, including gunshot wounds to his neck and shoulder, and remained hospitalized awaiting surgery as Houston-area hospitals faced extraordinary capacity constraints during the COVID-19 pandemic. His experience and recovery were documented by FOX 26 Houston.

Five years later, his Amped Summer submission offered a very different chapter of his life.

Valdez shared the long road back, including years of physical pain and the mental toll of the shooting, before eventually returning to the gym and beginning to rebuild his strength. He described progressing from struggling with weights as light as five and 10 pounds to nearly bench pressing his own body weight again.

Along the way, messages inside Amped became a personal reminder of how far he had come.

"What helps a lot is the things that you guys have chosen to put up on the walls. 'You vs. You, Stronger than Yesterday.' Every single time I'm in there, I look at it and it's a reminder," Valdez said.

His journey ultimately stood out among more than 2,000 participating creators, earning Valdez the $10,000 Grand Prize and making him the first Amped Summer champion.

"I can't tell you how many people have told me, 'You made it for a reason. You're here for a reason,'" Valdez said. "This shows me that this is the beginning. I'm starting to see the reason, and it's to help others."
