Anacostia & Pacific Company Moves to Railway Exchange Building
Burnham-designed structure is former Santa Fe Railway headquarters
CHICAGO, June 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Anacostia & Pacific Company, Inc. (www.anacostia.com) and Anacostia Rail Holdings Company, Inc. said they have relocated their headquarters to Suite 600 in the Railway Exchange/Santa Fe Building at 224 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL, 60604, effective May 31. The company had been located in the Monadnock Building since 1992.
Anacostia & Pacific's new location is in the historic Michigan Avenue district among some of Chicago's notable attractions, such as Millennium Park and the Art Institute of Chicago.
The Railway Exchange Building opened in 1904 and is considered one of Chicago's first high-rises. Renowned architect Daniel Burnham designed it according to his signature style, which combined ornate detail with a simple layout. The white terra cotta structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has a skylit lobby with a grand staircase that occupies the bottom two floors. Distinctive portholes line the upper cornice to allow natural light into upper-level offices. Burnham's architectural office was located in the building.
The building is also known as the Santa Fe Building because it was formerly the headquarters of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, a predecessor to today's BNSF Railway. The move relocates an operating railroad headquarters to the building 20 years after Santa Fe's departure in 1991.
