Following incidents in South Carolina, Missouri, New York and other states across the country, Police officers have been under intense scrutiny recently for allegations of excessive force. An unfortunate repercussion of this is that the actions of a few have tarnished the reputation of the whole force. Anger management training is necessary to protect the wellbeing of all parties involved, to safeguard the mental, physical and emotional health of the officer and the physical wellbeing of the public, and promote a good relationship between members of law enforcement and society. For these reasons the Diversion Center has created the Anger Management for Officers curriculum. This workbook will assist facilitators in conducting psycho-education groups to officers who have issues with anger and aggressive behavior.
This workbook helps facilitators provide at least 24 different groups and has 36 topics of discussion. This thought provoking workbook is applicable to various demographics and helps officers of the law examine issues through open discussion.
Topics include: self-awareness, fear, decision making scenarios, picking your battles, mood management, identifying triggers, amygdala hijack, self-care, assertiveness, self-talk, forgiveness, anger log, and more. (100 pages designed for a 12 week Anger Management Program)
The Diversion Center has also created a Certified Anger Management Specialist training for officers that wish to facilitate anger management groups within their department. This training will give members of law enforcement the tools needed to effectively manage their anger and emotional outbursts. Our training provides strategies to resolve emotional hijacking and aggressive behavior. We also review the process of anger and how it affects the mind and body. We evaluate anger scenarios, review the cognitive behavioral therapy approach, explain the importance of self-awareness, emotional intelligence, mindfulness meditation, and other concepts. Our aim is to offer an effective training that stimulates the mind and increases understanding of anger and aggressive behavior.
