Apangea Learning to Help States Align With New National Math Standards
Push for Measurable Skills Facilitated By Apangea Math's Differentiated Learning & Reporting
PITTSBURGH, June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- With state educational authorities now deciding if they want to adopt the newly finalized Common Core State Standards, Apangea Learning Inc. (www.apangealearning.com), leaders in personalized online tutoring, said today that it is prepared to help states align with new national math standards.
The company also said it will be offering consultation for administrators and teachers about the new standards at the upcoming International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) annual conference (http://center.uoregon.edu/ISTE/2010) in Denver.
Apangea offers its Apangea Math service, used in thousands of classrooms across the country as a supplemental online learning program to help both at-risk and advanced K-12 math students master math problem-solving skills and earn the confidence to move through their academic careers. First launched in 2002, Apangea Math remains the only online service that provides real-time, one-on-one tutoring by certified math teachers.
"We have a long and successful track record of developing content that meets various state standards," said Matt Freedman, Apangea's Director of Educational Services. "We know how to work with individual schools and school districts to help them achieve their goals. Now as national standards are on the horizon, we can leverage that expertise to help them comply."
Freedman noted that Apangea Math features extensive assessment and reporting tools to measure a student's progress and then to report achievement levels to teachers and administrators.
"The new standards put increased emphasis on measurable skills. We help our subscribing schools develop individual learning pathways for each student. We support each student when and how that individual needs it most," Freedman said. "The differentiated learning capability and reporting we offer are critical for school districts as they work to achieve the new national standards. It is an early-warning system for schools to gauge whether their students are performing at the levels they need to be."
The Common Core State Standards (www.corestandards.org) were released earlier this month by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. They are part of the Obama Administration's proposed revamp of the nation's educational system, in part by creating national standards and then rewarding those schools that achieve the standards. States are not required to adopt the new national standards.
