Apple, Facebook and Google are all looking for new ways to profit from the growing smartphone market. A recent report forecast growth at a CAGR of 8.1% by 2019. It states that smartphone prices have been constantly reducing in the market, which is making them more affordable, and is expected to lead to their increased adoption during this period. Facebook and Google recently announced new programs for news on smartphones, and now Apple has followed suit.
Apple News currently provides news articles from a select group of media outlets - including ESPN, the New York Times and Bloomberg. But its hoping to entice new publishers by providing them with easily accessible reader data. According to reports, publishers will keep 100% of the advertising they sell inside the app while Apple will take 30% from ads it sells.
In-app advertising is a recent trend that is being adopted by most brand managers, as it is an effective means of advertising due to its high visibility. The high adoption of smartphones and tablets provides a platform for mobile advertising agencies to reach the target customers through mobile apps, supporting the growth of the global in-app advertising market. A report on the in-app advertising market expects it to grow 39.97% by 2019.
A similar report on global mobile ad-spending forecasts growth at a rate of 38.12%. It states that with the
increased downloading and usage of apps, it is easier for mobile advertisers to understand the behavior of an individual and to cater to their interests and needs.
Apple are also planning to add a new ad format for the app, which is designed to put banner ads more seamlessly side by side with regular articles in the news feed. These new native ads are expected to debut later this month.
