CAMPBELL, Calif., Aug. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- AQUA Licensing, LLC ("AQUA"), a leading patent advisory and transaction firm, is pleased to announce it has teamed with Japan Marketing Office ("JMO"), a leading sales and marketing consulting firm, to offer expert patent portfolio analysis and monetization services to leading Japanese technology companies.

In 2013, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), granted more than 270,000 patents, including more than 76,850 patent to the top 50 companies.  Four Japanese companies made the top ten, including two in the top five – Canon and Sony.

Most patents are under-valued and under-utilized by their owner.  Accordingly, AQUA believes that there are hundreds of millions of dollars are in under-utilized patent assets held in Japan.

AQUA's team of Intellectual Property (IP) experts helps firms understand the relevance of their patent assets to their business strategy and monetize assets that are no longer relevant.

Patent assets are classified as Core or Non-Core based upon their ability to delivery market protection, defensive value or neither.   AQUA then assesses the value of the Non-Core assets to determine whether high value assets, no longer relevant to the business, are being held.

In most situations, these Non-Core assets should be licensed, or sold, to more effectively deploy the capital.

Once high value Non-Core assets are identified, AQUA runs a non-assertive, industry friendly marketing program designed to license or sell the assets.

"We are pleased to be working with JMO in delivering our proven process for maximizing the value of IP assets in Japan.   We believe that our IP monetization expertise, teamed with JMO's understanding of the local market, will deliver outstanding value to the leading innovators in Japan", said Mark McMillan, AQUA's Managing Director.

JMO's founder, Nobuyuki Imamura said "AQUA is at the forefront of an exciting new revenue opportunity for major Japanese companies seeking to compete more aggressively in their core markets.  Now is the right time and Japan is the right place for AQUA's services.  We are very pleased to be working together to serve client's IP business needs."
