Through an exclusive agreement and in collaboration with The Research Foundation of the State University of New York Stony Brook, Artelo is developing a Fatty Acid Binding Protein 5 (FABP5) inhibitor to modulate the endocannabinoid system for the treatment of cancer, inflammation, and pain. Fatty Acid Binding Proteins have been identified as intracellular transporters for the endocannabinoid anandamide (AEA), a neurotransmitter produced in the brain that binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors. Inhibition of FABP5 will lead to higher levels of AEA and may have significant potential in treating pain. Additionally, FABP5 and PPARß/δ are critical mediators of epidermal growth factor receptor-induced carcinoma cell growth. Artelo is working with Stony Brook University to optimize a FABP5 inhibitor for the treatment of breast and prostate cancers.
