Artist E.D. Taylor Announces Only Human, Wrestling Entropy: an Inside Outsider Art Exhibit Jan. 15 - March 14
Taylor's exhibit will be head at The Galleries at Cleveland State University
CLEVELAND, Oct. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Ms. Skull Face gazes past the all-seeing blind man. In a nearby room lives a carnival display of handwritten, drawn, and typed dreams and visions. Elsewhere, Bobby Darin wields a flamethrower, while lightning strikes Frankenstein's bride. Who modeled for the Frankenstein drawing? Why, the artist E.D. Taylor herself of course, standing nude with an easel in front of her full-length mirror. Taylor works with all kinds of media, ranging from charcoal to resin, in her studio that once served as a formal dining room.

Much of Taylor's current, feverish output reflects her nine-day stay in the behavioral health services ward — formerly the psychiatric ward — of Lutheran Hospital. In December 2013, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She is continuing treatment, and barring a medical breakthrough, will take medication to regulate the disease for the rest of her life. Meds don't stop mood swings completely, but they enable the artist to function outside of a hospital environment. The only good thing about the diagnosis is that there is a documented, if complicated, relationship between bipolar disorder and creativity. This might partly explain the restlessness and material exploration that characterize Taylor's artwork.
