Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer Raises More Than $650,000 for Georgia's Breast Cancer Organizations
Nearly 700 Walkers Participated in the Ninth Annual Event
ATLANTA, Sept. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Along a beautiful, rolling, 30-mile Atlanta course in perfect fall weather, nearly 700 walkers completed the ninth annual Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, raising more than $650,000 in individual donations for breast cancer organizations dedicated to serving Georgia communities. Walkers and volunteers at this past weekend's event included men and women from 137 cities and towns in Georgia and 20 states. The Atlanta 2-Day Walk is the only walking event in Georgia where all funds raised stay in state and support Georgia-based breast-cancer organizations.
"The impact of this one weekend will resonate with every single walker," said Kim Goff, executive director, It's The Journey, producers of the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer. "For some it will be sharing the challenge of walking 30 miles, for others it will be for walking in honor of a friend or family member, and for still more it will be the incredible spirit of the walkers and volunteers dedicated to doing something to help those affected by breast cancer. And the impact for our grantees – breast cancer organizations here in Georgia – will be felt every day in the year ahead and beyond." This year's walk took walkers through Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead, including lunch on the lawn of the Georgia Governor's Mansion, as well as historic intown neighborhoods and parkways before finishing at Pemberton Place at The World of Coca-Cola.
Since 2003, the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer has raised more than $7.5 million and awarded 146 grants to breast cancer organizations in Georgia. The only distance walking event solely focused on supporting Georgia-based breast cancer organizations, participants in the Atlanta 2-Day Walk individually raise funds as part of their experience. "Every single dime raised, stays here in Georgia and helps our fellow Georgians – it's powerful to know that what you're doing directly helps your neighbors affected by or at risk of breast cancer," added Goff. According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 10,000 Georgians are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.
The tenth anniversary of the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer will be held Oct. 6-7, 2012. Registration is now open at www.2daywalk.org and a special early registration discount is available now through this Friday, Oct. 1, 2011. Registrants for next year can use the discount code EARLY BIRD at the secure online registration.
