Atlanta Ophthalmologist to Soon Offer the Latest FDA-Approved Procedure for Vision Correction - SMILE
Patients can enjoy clear near vision with the SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) procedure performed with the advanced VisuMax Femtosecond Laser
ATLANTA, Sept. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Farooq Ashraf of The Atlanta Vision Institute is pleased to announce that he will soon offer the SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) surgery for patients wishing to reduce or eliminate myopia (nearsightedness). The US FDA has approved the SMILE procedure for the treatment of myopia. A breakthrough in laser vision correction technology, the VisuMax Femtosecond Laser received safety clearance from the FDA last week.
"The LASIK procedure is approaching 20 years of service and no significant advancement in the core aspect of the procedure has occurred during this time period," said Dr. Ashraf. "The SMILE procedure represents the third generation of vision correction. It is PRK without the pain and LASIK without cutting of a flap. SMILE is a simple procedure that requires no flap creation nor any laser tissue ablation. It has the potential of being a safer procedure than LASIK, and offers less discomfort than PRK or LASIK."
During the SMILE procedure, a disc-shaped piece of tissue is removed through a keyhole incision on the surface of the cornea. Removing the tissue reshapes the cornea, correcting the nearsightedness. The procedure takes approximately 10 minutes and recovery time is minimal; most patients are able to resume regular activities the day after treatment. Since no flap is created there are significantly less restrictions on patients. "This can be beneficial for occupations such as firefighters, police, and the military," states Dr. Ashraf. "Also, many of our patients have active lifestyles, and the SMILE procedure may be beneficial to those individuals as compared to LASIK."
The SMILE procedure has been approved for use in Dubai, UAE for the past three years. Dr. Ashraf has firsthand experience with this procedure since he has performed the SMILE procedure in Dubai. He is the medical director of The Atlanta Vision Clinic in Dubai.
