Atlas Oil Emergency Fueling Solutions Shares Emergency Preparedness Tips For Health Care Facilities
TAYLOR, Mich., Oct. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- As we reflect on the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, one of the deadliest weather events in U.S. history, Atlas Oil Emergency Fueling Solutions (Atlas Oil EFS) extends emergency preparedness tips to mission critical health care facilities. Atlas Oil Executive Vice President Bob Kenyon provided the tips as part of the company's reflection on the storm's anniversary.
According to a City of New York Government report on Superstorm Sandy, power loss was the primary cause for evacuations of health facilities. These evacuations forced hospitals and nursing homes across New York City to close, displacing nearly 2,000 patients and costing the facilities an estimated $1 billion in costs associated with emergency response measures.
What's more, the 2012 storm shuttered 70 percent of East Coast oil refineries, meaning even health centers that had emergency generators could not get the fuel they needed to keep them running. Atlas Oil EFS, working as a contractor for national distributor Foster Fuels, supported the Federal Emergency Management Administration in recovery efforts by transporting more than 400,000 gallons of fuel from other areas of the country and distributing it right from their trucks.
"During Superstorm Sandy, fueling back-up generators was only the beginning," said Kenyon. "We were out there directly filling fuel tanks of emergency response vehicles, and even private vehicles of doctors and nurses so they could get to and from work to help patients in need."
To prepare in advance and avoid many of the situations that resulted from Superstorm Sandy, Atlas advises all mission critical health care facilities to safely position generators above ground, get a guaranteed fuel contract in place and, most importantly, to test and practice all emergency plans on a regular basis.
