Attorney John Sheehan Promotes Accident Prevention With Vision Zero Scholarship
The dangers of distracted driving are all too familiar to injury attorneys like John J. Sheehan. As a part of the attorney's 2015 efforts to raise awareness and significantly reduce traffic-related deaths in Boston and throughout the U.S., the Law Office of John Sheehan is once again hosting an Accident Prevention Scholarship that is underpinned by the same philosophies as the 'Vision Zero' road safety practices adopted by nearly every city in the United States.
BOSTON, April 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- There is an ever growing need for road safety programs, practices and education that work to keep our roads, the drivers who drive on them and pedestrians who use them safe. One of the most recognized efforts to date that promotes these principles is the Vision Zero Traffic Program. This is an initiative to reduce traffic deaths and serious traffic injuries to zero in 10 years and has been adopted from a well known Swedish accident prevention program. In 2014, roughly 33,000 people were either killed or seriously injured in traffic-related accidents, of which approximately 11,000 were the result of the driver being distracted while behind the wheel.
The renewal of the Vision Zero Auto Accident Prevention Scholarship gives the Law Office of John Sheehan the opportunity to stay involved with the efforts that will take serious auto accidents from being 'inevitable' to being preventable. Attorney Sheehan isn't the only one who has made a commitment to traffic safety, brands such as Toyota are getting involved with the movement to end distracted driving. Another organization leading the efforts in this category is the National Safety Council who is promoting the 'Focused Driver Challenge,' a pledge that people can take to not use cellular devices while behind the wheel.
"There is an overwhelming amount of risk involved with being distracted while behind the wheel," says Sheehan. "We can't afford to lose another person because of the reckless, preventable actions of a person who has been entrusted with the responsibility of driving." The Vision Zero initiative also focuses its efforts on promoting safer street designs as many cities – especially high-volume ones like New York and San Francisco – have come to realize that many of their streets are dangerous by their design, rather than the acts of the drivers who use them. The overall aim is to develop higher standards for both those who build the nation's roads and highways, as well as the people who use them. With an effort like Vision Zero, and the support of organizations like the Law Office of John Sheehan, the nation is moving closer and closer to curtailing traffic-related injuries and deaths.
