Audiobooks.com Publishing: Debby Irving's privilege-examining memoir "Waking Up White" now available in audio
TORONTO, April 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Audiobooks.com Publishing today announced the release of the audiobook of "Waking Up White" by Debby Irving, narrated by the author.
The memoir, which focuses on Irving's examination of race and privilege in her own life as a white, upper-middle class woman, was originally published in 2014 but had not previously been made available in audio. Due to the intensely personal nature of the story and Irving's experience as a public speaker, she was a natural choice to be cast as the narrator of the book. "When I learned that Audiobooks.com Publishing had inquired about obtaining the audiobook rights for Waking Up White, I braced myself to share with them one non-negotiable: I wanted to self-narrate. After all, it's such a personal story," says Irving. "To my delight, in their first correspondence, they had one hope in particular: That I would narrate my own story."
Irving worked with lead sound engineer Bryan DePuy to set up a temporary sound studio in her home for the duration of the recording, which began in the fall of 2015. "Debby took on a great challenge in not only being a first-time narrator, but in acting as her own recording engineer, using software and equipment we provided to her in her own home," says Michelle Kaatz, Director of Acquisitions & Productions. "We're very happy that we could help to bring this story to life in audio using her voice, and that we can be a part of bringing this eye-opening title to a wider audience."
The print book has been praised as "a brutally honest, unflinching exploration of race and personal identity, told with heart by a truly gifted storyteller" by Tim Wise, a prominent anti-racist author and community organizer. Jodi Picoult, author of "The Storyteller" and "My Sister's Keeper," praised the book, saying "Irving's experience on display – warts and all – will help white people, who haven't noticed the role systemic privilege has played in their lives, start to see the world in a new way."
The audiobook will be available immediately through Audiobooks.com and shortly afterwards though Audible, iTunes, and Downpour, as well as library distributors and all other major audiobook providers.
