Automotive battery management systems have become an inseparable part of the hybrid and battery electric vehicles.All these battery driven vehicle types depend partially or completely on the power support from battery packs.

Hybrid and electric vehicles can be divided into four major types of vehicles: mild hybrid, full hybrid, plug-in hybrid electric and battery electric that runs on battery alone.The differences are dictated by the performance of the electric motor, the size of the battery, the charging of the battery and presence or absence of the IC engine.
In a mild hybrid system, the electric motor can provide support from 5 kWh to up to 20 kWh and is primarily used to start or accelerate at low engine speeds.The full hybrid system has a much stronger electric engine of 20 kWh to 60 kWh and can function at high speeds for short periods of time.
Plug-in hybrid vehicles are similar to full hybrids but differ in their battery packs.A plugin hybrid has a much stronger engine of 60 kWh to 100 kWh and has larger batteries to support longer distance travel.
The battery electric vehicle too uses a battery output from 22 kWh in smaller cars to more than 100 kWh in the largest battery used in Tesla cars. Unlike on-board charging for mild and full hybrids, a plug-in hybrid vehicle and electric vehicle can be charged externally and can act as a pure electric vehicle. In full hybrids and plug-in hybrids, the electric motor can be used to drive the vehicle without the aid of a conventional IC engine for a limited distance.
The evolution of large sized battery packs has led to a shift from conventional lead acid batteries and NiMH batteries to lithium ion batteries which have a higher energy density (i.e., three times as much as a lead acid battery and 40% more than a NiMH battery). This shift has further boosted the demand for battery management systems because lithium ion battery is prone to overheating and overcharging and can damage and decay as a result of mismanagement. A battery management system is necessary to control the cell charge discharge, cell balancing, temperature control and other specifications within a battery pack. For example, the 100-kWh battery pack in top model of Tesla S has 16 modules with 516 cells, making 8,256 cells per pack. The battery management system plays a pivotal role in maintaining health of the many cells in a battery pack. Other battery types such as NiMH batteries or advanced lead acid batteries use a battery management system that is fairly simple and less costly as compared to complex lithium ion batteries. Research is being conducted to find new battery chemistries that have higher energy density than lithium ion batteries such as the solid-state batteries, lithium air batteries, lithium sulfur batteries etc. Until new batteries are commercially available, the market trend will shift towards the usage of lithium ion batteries across all vehicle types. These new batteries will still require battery management systems because the batteries will be exposed to very dynamic and demanding operating conditions as battery sizes grow for a longer driving range for EVs.
