FREMONT, Calif., Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Axelsys LLC today announced the formal launch of tailored Sustaining Engineering Services. Axelsys has created a program that is designed to relieve overworked, under-manned engineering teams meet their organization's need to update and maintain older product designs. By off-loading the older designs to Axelsys, these organizations can focus on new products that will generate greater top line and bottom line growth.

Sustaining Engineering is typically performed on products that have been or currently at some level of production. Product companies are continually updating or modifying product designs to incorporate new product features (as result of input from the market), improve performance, or lower production costs. In cases of mature products (generally over 5 years old), critical components, such as MCUs and FPGAs may have reached their End-of-Life (EOL - also known as Obsolescence or PDN – Product Discontinuance Notice). In such cases, re-design of the product to incorporate newer components is generally required.
In extreme situations, companies with legacy designs have lost or misplaced critical design documentation. Axelsys has developed processes to reverse engineer designs - enabling lower engineering costs and ensuring a successful outcome. With its Sustaining Engineering Services, Axelsys has melded its Electronic Design and Contract Manufacturing Services to implement concurrent Design for Manufacturing (DFM). This process implements manufacturing knowledge into the design process ensuring the lowest overall product cost.
"Axelsys is a charter member of DigiKey's Design Services Providers Network and remains in excellent standing in the program," said Randall Restle, Digi-Key's Director of Applications Engineering. "With the ever persistent problem of newer technology replacing older technology and thereby bringing designed-in devices to their End-of-Life (EOL), we welcome Axelsys' focus on Sustaining Engineering services. Customers now have a firm to lean upon to replace obsolete, hard to get, or increasingly expensive chips, or entire boards for that matter, resulting in prolonged end-product lifespan and, many times, end-product cost savings. Another benefit of having a Sustaining Engineering 3rd party for OEMs is that focus on new product development is uncompromised. Axelsys is providing the right solution at the right time."
