Backbone Announces Cloud-Based, Talk Radio Production Suite at NAB 2016

Backbone asserts that 2016 is the pivotal year in a sea change for radio broadcasting, perhaps relegating music-rich programming to local terrestrial airplay and college/high school radio. With the recent publication of a new music royalty rate structure, the Copyright Royalty Board has swept away special provisions for small webcasters and commercial AM/FM simulcasters, requiring them to make expensive royalty payments on each song "performance." As the new rates hinder terrestrial stations that stream music, and as music services like Pandora® and Spotify® continue to gain online market share, there is expected to be even more emphasis placed on stations building audiences through royalty-free programming, such as sports, news and talk radio.
