A 27 year old woman, Roberta Backus, opened the marketing, advertising, and public relations agency. The year 1978 was a time when women were struggling to be equal in the workforce and get ahead. There were few women -owned businesses back then. Having spent most of her career working in an industry dominated by men at agencies like Mike Sloan and Ryder and Schild, Roberta was determined that she had the talent and ability to make it on her own in spite of her gender.
